Hajime Isa is known for producing Showa Sanke in Ojiya and is really respected by both breeders and amateurs as being one of the finest Showa breeders in the whole world – even alongside Takeda in south Japan.
He also breeds a few Kohaku and Sanke.
His actual location is very easy to find, if you are travelling from Nagaoka towards Ojiya, by the main road, Hajime’s Koi farm is around 150 metres on the right-hand side of the road just before you reach the Ojiya railway station which is on the left-hand side of the road. However, there are no signs in English to signify the fact.
Some years ago, I asked Toshio Sakai, (MY HERO) and owner of the Isawa Nishikigoi Center in Isawa, Yamanashi to name his 10 best Koi breeders in all of Japan and one of them was Hajime Isa in Ojiya.
Hajime used to be the president, a few years ago, of the All-Japan Koi Breeders Society but has since retired from this position to hand over the post to Seniichi Mano – owner of Izumiya Koi farm in Iwamagi. Hajime was also very vocal, over the Internet, as to how we could keep away ‘KHV’ (KOI HERPES VIRUS) from our own Koi ponds.
Hajime is a very kind and gentle man but is also very determined AND – he KNOWS Showa varieties very, very well indeed, in fact – he is a master! His mud ponds total 60,000 square metres.
So, if at one period of your life, you decide to visit Yamakoshi, DO try and call into the Isa Koi farm and see for yourself the quality of Nishikigoi he offers for sale – you will not be disappointed. You will have no problems in dealing with Hajime as his honesty is impeccable.
